ABOUT THE FMI
Founded in 1970, the Friedrich Miescher Institute is devoted to fundamental biomedical research. Our goal is to exploit new technologies to further our understanding of the basic molecular mechanisms of cells and organisms in health and disease. Our current research focuses on the fields of epigenetics, growth control and neurobiology. Core funding for the FMI comes from the Novartis Research Foundation supplemented by grants from national and international agencies to individual FMI scientists. Through this support the FMI has become internationally recognised as a centre of excellence in biomedical research with a strong record of innovation in the molecular biology of disease. By hosting postdoctoral fellows and graduate students through our international PhD programme, we have contributed to the training and career development of hundreds of young scientists. Currently the FMI has around 300 staff, including 24 research group leaders and a core of technicians and support staff. In addition we are home to 95 PhD students and about 80 postdoctoral fellows from almost 40 different countries. Our members enjoy Basel as a city of diverse culture and a centre for biological research, which hosts excellent academic institutions and leading life science companies. Our position as part of the Novartis Reseach Foundation is invaluable in providing an optimal environment for fusing academic and applied biomedical research.
